She added that she spent the next 4 1/2 years internally leading seminars for interns, new hires, and even C-suite executives. "Next thing you know, they were flying me around the US teaching Excel," Norton said. Her bosses thought the courses showed off her ambition and knowledge and decided to make spreadsheet training her main job. ![]() She landed her first consulting gig in 2014 while still at school and decided to build an Excel training course for Protiviti, she said. She added that she came to use Excel for tracking her workouts and meditation schedule. "I was creating spreadsheets for everything, even my personal life," Norton said. ![]() One of her professors compared data modeling to playing "The Sims" - it allows you to simulate a limitless number of outcomes - which really resonated with her, she said. Norton's passion for Excel began in 2013 when she was getting her MBA at Binghamton University in upstate New York, where her focus on supply-chain management and business analytics had her using the program in most of her classes. Meanwhile, she's been diving deep into meditation, and it keeps her grounded amid the chaos that surrounds being an Excel influencer, she said. With her business now a hit, Norton intends to spend some time in Hawaii this summer as a digital nomad, followed by plans to spend the rest of the year moving between California's Lake Tahoe, Costa Rica, Miami, and Arizona. She's been running Miss Excel from her parents' house on Long Island, New York. "But 'Miss Excel' kind of just had a persona to it, which I liked." "The original name was 'Built to Excel,'" Norton said. In February, Norton said she decided she was making enough through her various platforms to quit her job as a senior consultant at the global consulting firm Protiviti to focus on her Miss Excel business full time. ![]() Norton teaches Excel skills to businesses, as well as schools like New York Institute of Technology, which commissioned her to speak to its students. That puts her on track to earn well over six figures this year, especially when combined with her speaking engagements and other gigs. That video, which has more than 1 million views, is just one of hundreds in which Norton - who goes by Miss Excel online - schools her combined 400,000 followers on Instagram and TikTok on how to use Excel, Microsoft's ubiquitous spreadsheet software.
